Rotary members recognize three Renton School District high school students each month as Youth of the Month. After being selected by counselors at each of the district’s three comprehensive high schools, a selection committee of Rotary members review applications and interview students to identify those who will be selected as Youth of the Month. The award is given to students who possess leadership abilities, maintain a good grade point average, participate in school activities and volunteer in their community.
February Rotary Youth of the Month are:
Kathy Nguyen
Senior at Hazen High School
Kathy Nguyen holds a 3.9 GPA. She has been involved in HOSA, Math Club, Key Club, STEM Club, Travel Club, National Honor Society, Asian Student Coalition, FBLA, Cross Country and Tennis. She has received several HOSA awards, varsity cross country letters, WIAA Top Outstanding Team recognition, Pride Award, Academic All Star, Spirit of the Highlander recognition.
Nguyen works at Highlands Neighborhood Center and volunteers with COPE Junior Health Scholars, Bloodworks Northwest, American Heart Association, Salvation Army and HOPE Heart Institute.
She plans to attend a four-year university in hopes to become a cardiac surgeon.
Brianna Zhou
Senior at Lindbergh High School
Brianna Zhou holds a 3.6 GPA. She has been involved in National Honor Society, Lindbergh Robotics, Vocal Jazz Ensemble and Chamber Choir, Eagle Crew Core Council, Speech and Debate, track and field. She has received top merit/honor roll, Masonic Academic recognition, National Honor Society, South Puget Sound League All-Academic award, WIAA Distinguished Scholar varsity letters. She volunteers with the Katia’s Childcare and local elementary and middle schools. Zhou plans to attend a four-year university to study human biology or chemistry. She hopes to become a doctor to provide the community with more access to medical care.
Steven Marzan
Senior at Renton High School
Steven Marzan holds a 3.6 GPA. He has been involved in KPOP Club, Renton Peer Mentors, Asian-Pacific Islander Club, Filipino Student Union and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. He has received Honor Roll award, Student Conservation Association certificate of completion and Microsoft certification. Marzan works part time at Safeway and volunteers at Beacon United Methodist Church and the Student Conservation Association. After high school, he plans to attend University of Washington or Seattle University to work toward a nursing degree and minor in the arts. Marzan hopes to become a nurse and possibly also become a performer.
