William Werner recently won a $10,000 college scholarship. But William, who still reads picture books, has a lot to learn before he can use that money.
That’s because William is only 2. His scholarship is from KinderCare.
William’s parents were surprised to learn their son was one of only two national winners.
“We didn’t even remember entering it,” William’s mother April said. “… We’re already very happy with KinderCare. This is something that has made our lives easier.”
William has received daycare at the Renton Highlands KinderCare for almost a year.
He was entered into the scholarship contest because his parents pay for that daycare online.
“They’re a really great family,” says Angel Williams, center director for the Highlands KinderCare. “I’m really happy and excited for him.”
April says her son is “just a normal kid who likes to play and read books.”
Of course, at William’s age, reading means looking at pictures. His favorite books are “Where the Wild Things Are” and “In the Night Kitchen,” both by Maurice Sendak.
“He likes normal boy stuff, too, like cars and everything else,” April says.
He also likes KinderCare.
“He loves it. He’s happy with his teachers,” April says.
She and her husband Dustin work at Costco. They wanted to send William to college even before receiving the KinderCare scholarship. But the extra $10,000 makes the savings that much easier.
“We always planned to put money aside for it, we just weren’t sure what it would come from,” April says. “Now we have a nice little head start on postsecondary school, college, trade school, whatever.”
