Here’s the film’s description from the Seattle International Film Festival.
Opening with a bomb ripping through a movie theater, “Cold War” throws the audience pell-mell into a dizzying world of police corruption, criminal conspiracies, and political infighting, roaring out the gate as the stylish debut of two directors who’ve long played a significant role in Hong Kong film. With the police commissioner overseas, his duties have been split between the crisp Sean Lau (Aaron Kwok) and the rough-and-tumble M. B. Lee (Tony Leung Ka-fai). The two men’s rivalry is already fractious before a police van carrying an emergency-squad team is hijacked and ransomed for $12 million. With Lee’s son among the hostages he commandeers the rescue operation, a botched embarrassment that leads to investigations of both Lee and Lau. But what the fiery young investigator (Aarif Rahman) seems to uncover is a convoluted plot to affect both men’s fortunes within their own department. Long-time assistant director Sunny Luk and art director Longman Leung show off what they’ve learned behind the scenes in this slick, engrossing thriller that earned nine awards at the 2013 Hong Kong Film Awards. Directors: Longman Leung, Sunny Luk. Cast: Tony Leung Ka-fai, Aaron Kwok, Charlie Yeung, Lam Ka Tung Gordon, Kar Lok Chin. Hong Kong 2012 (102 minutes)
