‘You’ve been flocked,’ but it’s for a good cause

When a Kentwood High School band teacher bought insurance, he thought he was covered, but for this special teacher, it wasn’t enough.

“We got flocked,” said Mike Simpson of Renton. “My wonderful seniors showed up at my house at about 11 o’clock last night, and we woke up to all those flamingos.”

In a kick-off fundraiser for the school year, Kentwood Band Boosters introduced their latest scheme. High school seniors are filling front yards with pink flamingos.

People can buy flamingo insurance, and Simpson did for $20, but the students made an exception, leaving a thank-you sign in his yard.

“The flamingos are a sign of love,” Simpson explained.

The seniors at the Covington school plan to drive the flamingos around for various prices.

“We have our ninjas that are setting them up during the dead of night,” he said.

Flocking victims are asked for $1 donations per bird to remove them or send them to another yard.

They have a sale this week, but people can order a flocking with 10 flamingos and a sign for $25.

The club picked up the idea from a local church that also did it for a fundraiser.

“It’s a chance to be a kid again,” said booster Linda Kieffer, who joined the seniors the first night.

Though Simpson’s wife might not agree.

“She knows she married a high school band teacher,” he said. “I’ve had a number of toilet paperings.”

The fundraiser goes toward sending kids on band trips, some supplies and senior scholarships.

“So it all goes right back into the band program,” Kieffer said. “I’d love to see us hit 500 bucks.”

The fundraiser runs through October’s Homecoming, but they’ll be available afterward.

“We’ll see how it goes. We may have to invest in more birds,” Kieffer said.

Kentwood band teacher Mike Simpson got flocked, as a part of a new fundraiser.

For $25, the Kentwood seniors will place 10 flamingos in anyone’s home with a sign. High school seniors placed these plastic flamingos in Kentwood teacher Mike Simpson’s front yard to show their thanks.
