Celebrating community and tradition through authentic Chinese cuisine

Three generations of family-run tradition keep this Renton gem thriving after 45 years

Generations of Renton families have visited The Golden Peacock to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, and other significant milestones. Gathering to celebrate together in a building that holds countless memories and familiar, old-school Chinese food.

Third-generation owner Richard Tse has worked alongside his family at The Golden Peacock since he was 15. Over the years, he’s watched as classmates, neighbors, and family members have marked their special occasions inside the walls of his family’s restaurant. As the restaurant celebrates its 45th anniversary, he reflects on a lifetime of memories, supporting fellow Renton residents through their milestones—or simply hosting family meals.

“It feels like a blink of an eye since I took over the restaurant, and to think we’re celebrating 45 years serving the residents of Renton—I honestly can’t believe it. I feel incredibly blessed and grateful for over four decades of continuous support from our loyal clientele here. We certainly wouldn’t have made it this far without them,” says Tse.

The Tse family first opened the doors to The Golden Peacock in 1979, and it has remained a family-run business for three generations. It was one of the first restaurants in the Renton area and the only one offering authentic, old-school Chinese cooking. Tse notes that many of the recipes on today’s menu are the same ones his parents used when they first opened the restaurant.

“We’ve, of course, added to the menu over the years, but we’ve never strayed from our roots. We’ve stayed focused on providing our customers with traditional Chinese food. While Asian fusion has become popular over the years, and there’s nothing wrong with exploring new flavors and approaches to cooking, there’s something special about celebrating classic dishes and familiar favorites,” says Tse.

His personal favorites have remained unchanged over the years. “Our garlic chicken drums, ginger beef, and honey walnut prawns are probably my personal favorites. Our most popular dishes include General Tso’s chicken, Mandarin sesame beef, garlic prawns, and some of our classics like chow mein, egg rolls in real egg wraps, almond chicken, and BBQ pork egg foo young.”

Tse adds that, 45 years later, all the food at The Golden Peacock is still made from scratch and cooked to order, just as his parents did when they first opened the business.

Reflecting on the community’s long-standing support, Tse says, “To the generations of families who have walked through our doors and made The Golden Peacock part of their celebrations and everyday meals—thank you. It’s been an honor to be a small part of your lives. Seeing familiar faces return year after year, generation after generation, has meant the world to me and my family. We’re incredibly grateful to be part of this community.”
