When Gurminder Kaur prepares her mouthwatering authentic Indian dishes at Renton’s Rice N Curry restaurant, she does it as a representation of the timeless New Dehli flavors she grew up with.
“All the recipes I learned from my mother at a very young age,” Kaur says. “In India cooking is considered an art, and mothers usually begin to teach their daughters at a very young age, passing down family recipes by show and tell. I had developed the love of cooking naturally right from my childhood.”
At Rice N Curry they spend hours marinating and cooking their food, resulting in great taste, depth of sophistication and variety.
They serve butter chicken – one of the world’s most popular dishes – as well as daal makhani and rogan gosht, an aromatic curried lamb dish.
“The rogan gosht uses a slow cooking technique – the recipe’s emphasis rather than heat from the spices,” Kaur says. “We make all our dishes from scratch – we grind our own fresh spices, and make homemade yogurt and paneer cheese as well.
And our butter chicken is not sweet at all – our customers say it’s the best in the United States!”
Happy reviewer Kira agrees: “The butter chicken is SO GOOD. The staff was exceptionally good, made sure we were satisfied with our meal and how it was cooked. Definitely making this a regular stop!”
Other tasty authentic dishes include bhuna gosht (lamb), channa masala, karahi paneer and mango lassi – their homemade yogurt and mango drink.
Beyond being incredibly tasty, this authentic Indian food offers health benefits, too, Kaur says.
“Indian food is not only about curry, chilies and oil – it’s a most healthy food!”
Kaur points out that channa masala (chickpeas), and bhindi masala (okra), are a rich source of vitamins, fiber and protein, and essential nutrients like vitamin C, and K, making both excellent replacements for meat dishes. She also notes that her homemade paneer cheese is rich in calcium and potassium.
“A good sign I see is people are coming back to Rice N Curry after trying our food,” Kaur says. “In 2021 when other businesses where closing, we were opening, and it was a very tough year. Now 2022 year brings us more new customers as more people hear about us and our food.
“During these difficult times the Renton Chamber were very supportive – so a big salute to them – and we want to say a very big thank you to the local Renton community for their love and support, and believing in our product!”
