A 19-year-old Renton man died May 24 of injuries he suffered in a one-car crash in southwest Renton May 10 that left the driver in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center.
Laquann A. Reed suffered massive injuries when the small Kia sedan crashed into a tree on Southwest Seventh Street, according to the King County Medical Examiner’s Office. Reed was a passenger in the right seat that took the brunt of the crash force.
The driver of the Kia, an 18-year-old senior Renton High School, was in critical condition at Harborview.
A 17-year-old junior at Sartori Education Center, an alternative high school in the Renton School District, was released earlier from Harborview. He was in the back seat.
According to a family friend, Reed has two sisters and two brothers.
Popeye’s Chicken, where all three of the teens worked, is taking contributions to help support Reed’s family. According to Alemeti Maxey, a manager at Popeye’s, Reed had moved to Renton to help support his mother and brothers and sisters. The family could use some help, she said.
“Laquann was a young man who was working hard to make a difference,” Maxey said.
The driver started working at Popeye’s six or seven months ago shortly after arriving from Africa, Maxey said. The driver’s name hasn’t been released.
The driver, who is new to the school this year, has a brother at Renton High, a freshman, according to Randy Matheson, a school district spokesman.
The Renton Police Department Traffic Unit is investigating the collision. The investigation at the scene indicated that speed was a factor in the collision, according to Renton Police Commander Paul Cline.
According to Cline, a Renton Police officer was flagged down at about 12:20 a.m. Sunday by a motorist and advised of a serious injury collision on Southwest Seventh Street. When officers arrived, they found the vehicle had left the roadway and struck a tree, according to Cline.
The three occupants of the Kia were taken to Harborview in critical condition.
The preliminary investigation determined that the vehicle had been traveling west on Southwest Seventh at a high rate of speed when it left the north side of the roadway, crossed over the sidewalk and struck a tree, according to Cline.
