About 500 families will line up outside Dimmitt Middle School Tuesday to receive Thanksgiving baskets and the chance to meet a few Seahawks players.
In a large multi-state and local community effort, the Seattle Seahawks, A Better Seattle, Unified Grocers, A Foundation for Kids, Dimmitt Middle School, King County Sheriff’s Office and the Greater King County Police Activities League (GKCPAL) will come together to make this a Thanksgiving to remember.
Dimmitt Middle School is located at 12320 80th Ave. S., on West Hill. The event runs from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm.
Families from Dimmitt Middle School and the Skyway community will receive boxes containing a turkey, potatoes, dinner rolls, rice, beans, canned goods and ingredients for making a pie or cake for dessert. In addition, Eric Christian, owner of local barber shop, Artistic Cutz, will be handing out vouchers for a free boys hair cut.
“This is a community that deserves caring attention from those who are willing to give this holiday season,” says Kendrick Glover, professional mentor for Greater King County PAL. “There is a great need in this community – many of these families don’t get to experience a traditional Thanksgiving meal so this is a wonderful opportunity for our Dimmitt Middle School families.”
“This is an opportunity for police officers to talk face to face with our community,” added King County Sheriff Sue Rahr. “Every interaction is an opportunity to further learn from and understand each other.”
Dimmitt Middle School is part of the Renton School District. Professional PAL mentor, Kendrick Glover, works with the youth at Dimmitt to help them stay focused in school, and make positive choices, both academically and personally. Dimmitt will be holding parent-teacher conferences the same day from 2 – 7 p.m. in the school gymnasium.
“The conferences are an important way for teachers to connect with parents and make sure their kids are on the right track in school,” says Dimmitt Middle School Principal John Schmitz, “Having the parents engaged and on the same page is vital to the success of our students.”
King County Sheriff Sue Rahr will be in attendance to support this community event, along with Seahawks players and officers from the King County Sheriff’s Office.
