KC Kids began only a couple months ago, but A Kids Place Dentistry in Renton has already signed up several patients for King County’s dental program for uninsured children. The Highlands children’s dental office is hoping even more patients sign up for the free pilot program at an open house Monday from 9 a.m-4 p.m.
“Any children can come to the open house and learn valuable information about the program,” says Michelle Giddens, clinic coordinator.
Open house attendees will also receive tours of the office and dental health gift bags.
Giddens calls the dental program “so awesome.”
King County began the pilot dental program at the beginning of this year. Funding comes from a $1 million grant from Washington Dental Service, the state’s largest dental insurer. The program is part of King County Executive Ron Sim’s Children’s Health Initiative, aimed at providing regular doctor and dental care for low-income children.
Washington Dental Services’ PPO (preferred provider organization) dentists are participating in KC Kids. The program is for uninsured King County children younger than 20 whose families earn between 250 and 300 percent of the federal poverty level. That’s $4,308 to $5,163 a month for a family of four. Families with income below KC Kids standards can qualify for other dental programs.
As of April 1, 218 children had enrolled in KC Kids. Once enrolled, children are covered until Dec. 31. The state is expected to take over the program in January. Families will need to reapply for the program at that time.
KC Kids covers most dental services, including exams, cleanings, fluoride, X-rays, fillings and root canals.
Erin McDonald says A Kids Place Dentistry decided to hold an open house to expose King County’s many uninsured children to the little-known KC Kids. McDonald is office manager.
“We wanted to make sure all the kids who are eligible have access to care,” clinic coordinator Giddens adds.
