The 33rd CROP Hunger Walk, a community-wide event sponsored by Church World Service and Renton Ecumenical Association of Churches to help hunger-fighting developments internationally and locally, is Sunday, May 1.
The 10K walk (and Golden 1.5 mile walk to the first checkpoint) will start at 1:30 p.m. at the Cedar River Trail — Liberty Park to Ron Regis Park and back — with registration at 1 p.m.
According to local coordinator Sharon Kenyon, last year for the seventh time, Renton was in the top 100 walks of over 2,000 communities in the country supporting CROP Hunger Walks.
Previously, the walks have raised over $604,000 to help the hungry with over $151,000 helping Renton food agencies.
This year, 25 percent of of the proceeds will stay local, helping Renton Salvation Army Food Bank, the Margie Williams Helping Hands Food Bank, ARISE, St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank and Center of Hope. The other 75 percent will go to world hunger programs and disaster relief in over 80 different countries.
This year’s goal is to raise $30,000.
