No one was injured, but six adults and three children were displaced following a fire Monday at the Wasatch Hills apartment complex on Southwest Fifth Court.
Firefighters from Renton, Kent and Tukwila responded to the blaze, which was kept contained to a single unit on the top floor, though officials said the fire did get into the attic space.
According to fire officials, the blaze started on the unit’s balcony and spread to the living room, but was knocked down by the building’s sprinkler system, preventing the fire from spreading further.
“if the sprinkler head wasn’t in the living room, it would have gone through that unit,” said fire inspector Cory Cappelletti.
Water damaged a handful of other units in the building, unit K. A cleaning company was on scene Monday night to help. Red Cross was also on scene, though it is unknown if they aided the families involved.
Firefighters on the scene said they had the blaze under control within five minutes of taking an offensive stand to fight it.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation and undetermined, according to officials, but damage to the building is estimated at $230,000.
