Art call to celebrate Erasmus the dragon deadline Feb. 24

Just in time for the Renton dragon’s “hatching month,” the Renton Municipal Arts Commission will give $200 to selected artists.

Spring is quickly on its way and with it comes the celebration of Erasmus, the Renton dragon.

April is Erasmus’ “hatching month” and the Renton Municipal Arts Commission is calling on local artists to help celebrate the city’s fire-breathing mascot.

The Arts Commission is asking “creative individuals” to submit concepts for four small pieces of art, which will be considered for a commission.

From the concepts, selected artists will be compensated $200 and asked to create one original piece of art.

“The commissioned artwork will be part of a dragon-themed scavenger hunt, part of our celebration of Erasmus and our city’s public art program,” said the Arts Commission, which is will review the artist’s qualifications before selecting the individuals to commission.

The art commission is part of a large celebration of the city’s beloved mascot, along with the Renton Downtown Dragon Pub Crawl on Sunday, April 2 and the Dragon Dash 5K/10K on Saturday, April 15.

The submission deadline is 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, and selected artists will be notified by Friday, March 3. Selected art that is delivered by the April 3 deadline will receive the $200 commission.

To apply, please submit your qualifications as outlined on rentonwa.gov/rmac. Contest contact information is included in the proposal.
