Benson Road near City Hall to close Saturday for transmission line repairs

Benson Road near Renton City Hall will close during the day Saturday for emergency repairs to a major Seattle City Light power transmission line through the city that failed last week. Benson Road will close from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. between Eagle Ridge Drive and just south of Renton City Hall, according to the City of Renton.

Benson Road will close from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. between Eagle Ridge Drive and just south of Renton City Hall, according to the City of Renton.

The Saturday closure will come on the heels of a Benson Road closure starting at 6 p.m. today (Thursday) and continuing until 4 a.m. Friday so that the state transportation department can begin placing girders for a new Benson bridge over Interstate 405.’

Traffic was heavy during the early evening commute on both directions of Benson Road leading up to the closure as work crews closed lanes to prepare for the girder work.

To finish placing the girders, the state also will close Benson Road near City Hall from 6 p.m. Tuesday (Jan. 9) to 4 a.m. Wednesday (Jan. 10).

Talbot Road and Grady Way are alternate routes to get around the Benson Road closures.

The bridge work is part of an $83.6 million state project to add capacity to I-405 and to build a half-diamond interchange serving Talbot Road.

The bridge work and other construction also will affect traffic on I-405:

• Thursday, Feb. 4 – the morning of Saturday, Feb. 6 – Crews will close up to two lanes on northbound I-405 from SR 167 to SR 169 nightly from 10 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. for construction work.

• Thursday, Feb. 4 – Crews will conduct intermittent rolling slowdowns on northbound I-405 from I-5 to just north of SR 167 from 11:59 p.m. to 4 a.m. to place bridge girders. Drivers should expect delays up to 15 minutes.

• Thursday, Feb. 4 – Crews will conduct intermittent rolling slowdowns on southbound I-405 from 112th Ave. S.E. to SR 167 from 11:59 p.m. to 4 a.m. to place bridge girders. Drivers should expect delays up to 15 minutes.

• Friday, Feb. 5 – Crews will close up to two lanes on southbound I-405 from SR 169 to SR 167 from 9 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. to set bridge girders.

• Saturday, Feb. 6 – Crews will close one lane on northbound I-405 from SR 167 to SR 169 from 10 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. to set bridge girders.

• Saturday, Feb. 6 – Crews conduct intermittent rolling slowdowns of the roadway on southbound I-405 from 112th Ave. S.E. to SR 167 from 3 to 6 a.m. to set bridge girders. Drivers should expect delays up to 15 minutes.

• Monday, Feb. 8; Wednesday, Feb. 10 – Crews will conduct intermittent rolling slowdowns on northbound I-405 from I-5 to just north of SR 167 from 11:59 p.m. to 4 a.m. to place bridge girders. Drivers should expect delays up to 15 minutes.

• Monday, Feb. 8 – the morning of Friday, Feb. 12 – Crews will close up to two lanes on northbound I-405 from SR 167 to SR 169 nightly from 10 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. for construction work.

• Monday, Feb. 8 – the morning of Friday, Feb. 12 – Crews will close up to two lanes on southbound I-405 from SR 169 to SR 167 nightly from 9 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. for construction work.
