Black River High sends off its last graduating class

Black River High School’s last graduating class was unusually large this year with about 30 students receiving their diplomas.

“We had some kids when got a little more motivated when they learned the program will not be in the same shape and form next year,” said Wendell Ellis, principal for three years.

The school is closing next year to reopen as The Secondary Learning Center, a continuum of alternative programs under one roof.

The graduation was also unusually large because of a high number of fifth-year seniors, Ellis said.

“It says something about their character knowing they have to come back another year to graduate,” he said. “It was nice to see them mature and become more focused in their education.”

Usually only about 20 kids graduate each spring.

With about 250 people in attendance, there was only standing room left during the commencement.

A senior luncheon before the ceremony gave the students a chance to thank parents and teachers for how far they had come.

“It’s a very emotional day,” Ellis said. “They come to us with a variety of different stories.”

About 11 students have made plans so far for continued education and training. A few are interested in nursing.

“We’re going to see those dreams and goals come to reality with all that hard work,” said Ellis, who will be a vice principal at Renton High School next year.

The celebration was bittersweet, but more sweet than bitter, he said. “It was a great ceremony, very tearful.”
