More than 300 walkers, runners and workers raised about $23,000 in last Saturday’s CROP Hunger Walk in Renton.

It’s expected that funds will continue to come in through May, said organizer Sharon Kenyon.

In 29 years of walking, the Renton CROP Walk has raised more than $500,000. Even 12 dogs and youth in bare feet walked in the event.

Seventy-five percent of the money raised goes to fight hunger worldwide, through Church World Service.

The other 25 percent locally will help the Salvation Army Renton Rotary Food Bank, the Friendly Kitchen, ARISE (Area of Renton Interfaith Shelter Endeavor), Margie Williams Helping Hands and St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank.

Churches, scouts, schools, clubs, organizations, businesses and individuals participated.

The route began at the Liberty Park shelter. There were two walks, one long and one short.

The Renton CROP Hunger Walk is sponsored by the REACH (Renton Ecumenical Association of Churches), as part of Church World Service’s CROP Hunger Walk national program.

Annually, there are more 1,600 CROP Hunger Walks in the United States with about 30 Walks in Washington.
