Damage from swollen May Creek in Renton closes bridge

Renton’s roads survived relatively unscathed during the weekend’s massive rainstorm. A small, out-of-way bridge wasn’t so lucky.

A rising Green River filled almost to the brim, making it impossible for surface water or creeks to drain into it. That meant the water from Springrook Creek had to go somewhere, so it backed up on the East Valley Highway in south Renton. The highway reopened in time for the Monday morning.

A slide was continuing to block Monster Road just before Martin Luther King Jr. Way Tuesday morning. Crews hope to have it open by Tuesday afternoon.

But it was a bridge on North 31st Street/Jones Avenue Northeast in the Kennydale area that once again is vexing city maintenance crews. The bridge over May Creek paralleling Interstate 405 has been closed in the past because of storm damage.

It was closed again after it sank “quite of bit” when the rains swelled May Creek over the weekend, said Gregg Zimmerman, the Renton’s public works administrator. The concrete bridge carries traffic over a large culvert.

“Repairing it (the bridge) periodically is less expensive than building an entirely new bridge,” said Zimmerman. The city will fix the bridge again, he said, but “it’s going to be closed for a while.”

However, the road only serves three homes and they have an alternate way in and out on a private driveway.
