Demolition of the parking garage at the Renton IKEA store began Thursday morning to make way for construction of a new, larger store at the same site.
A pair of excavators began tearing down the 365,000-square-foot structure Thursday morning in front of a small crowd that gathered to watch the store’s iconic blue walls begin to fall.
According to a press release from the company, IKEA is working to recycle, repurpose or salvage as much of the materials as possible.
Once the garage is gone, construction will begin on a new, 406,000-square-foot store in the location of the garage. When it is completed, the company will tear down the current store.
Until completion in 2017, however, the current store will remain open.
