Fairwood teenager arrested for bringing handgun to school

A 14-year-old boy was arrested at Northwood Middle School in Fairwood Monday afternoon for bringing an unloaded handgun to school.

A 14-year-old boy was arrested at Northwood Middle School in Fairwood Monday afternoon for bringing an unloaded handgun to school.

The boy, whose name wasn’t released, was taken from his classroom by sheriff’s deputies at about 12:30 p.m. at the school at 17007 S.E. 184th St.

The school is in the Kent School District in unincorporated King County.

The boy reportedly showed the gun to another student and was also overheard by other students talking about having a gun, according to Sgt. Cindi West, a spokeswoman for the King County Sheriff’s Office.

Students contacted a school security officer, who called police, she said in a press release. The boy was escorted from the classroom for the safety of the other students, and once outside the classroom, deputies discovered the boy had the gun in his jacket, she said.

He was arrested without incident and taken to the Juvenile Detention Center in Seattle.

The gun was not loaded and the boy did not have ammunition for the gun.  The gun’s serial number had been removed.
