One by one the scarecrows come, popping up around Renton.
The store-front tradition is in swing this month, as downtown is preparing for its annual Fall Harvest Festival and the Renton Chamber of Commerce Business Expo Saturday.
Downtown’s new Yoggi Frozen Yogurt was one of the first businesses to put up their scarecrow, Fred.
“If I can get up and have a little spirit … then maybe more people will participate,” said supervisor Dawn Hart. Black and orange decorations were piled on a nearby table.
The festival promises the traditional scarecrow contest and is planning to have about 300 pumpkins ready for kids to decorate.
About 35 vendors are expected to set up shop in the Renton Piazza, offering food, kettle corn and a plethora of crafts.
The Chamber of Commerce plans to host the Business Expo in a neighboring building, the Spirit of Washington Event Center.
“The garage door is going to be open to the festival for a better entrance,” said Kellie Jordan, the chamber’s director of events.
With about 50 to 70 businesses, there will be several raffles and giveaways, including free shopping bags from First Savings Bank.
“There’s a lot of new businesses,” Jordan said.
The expo, sponsored by Sam’s Club, is also expecting several non-profits and a performance from the Rockin’ Horse Dance Barn.
