The judges have picked the top film in Renton FilmFrenzy V, “Between the Lines.”
Only once in the first four years of FilmFrenzy did judges and the people agree on their favorite. That was in 2011, when “The Disconnect,” produced by Mitch Shepherd of Renton, won both awards.
So here’s the history of the Renton Reporter People’s Choice Curvee and how to view the entries:
• 2008: “Loaf’s Labors Lost,” a loaf of bread’s love story set in Renton. Best Picture was “Finger of God” that starts with a donkey’s behind and goes on to extol Renton’s virtues. NOTE: Chris Iley, who had a hand in producing “Loaf’s Labors Lost,” is the producer of “The Missing Piece,” which won the Open Division this year. (Entries are embedded in the story.)
• 2009: “I am Renton” that highlighted Renton businesses and community leaders. Best Picture was “Ayuda Pequeno,” a gripping story about homelessness. (The story includes a link to the 2009 contest.)
• 2010: “Transference,” a psychological thriller that by design was ambiguous. Best Picture was “Cliché and Carter,” an irreverent take on the buddy cop shows of the 1970s. (The story includes a link to the 2010 contest.)
• 2011: “The Disconnect” by Shepherd won the People’s Choice Curvee and Best Picture Curvee. In “The Disconnect” a man headed for his wedding gets some marriage advice from a stranger after calling the wrong number. (Here’s a link to the 2011 contest.)
This year’s Best Picture Curvee went to Shepherd’s “Between the Lines.” As of Friday, it was trailing in the People’s Choice voting. An early favorite would have to be “FilmMakers Revenge, which so far is outdistancing the field.
