The Renton Regional Fire Authority is investigating a fire at the Springbrook Trail that took place on April 15, which damaged the trail’s boardwalk.
The boardwalk is located on Southwest 27th Street between Oakesdale Avenue Southwest and Lind Avenue Southwest and provided visitors the opportunity to walk through the 129-acre Springbrook Creek Wetland Mitigation Bank.
The Springbrook Creek Wetland and Habitat Mitigation Bank Project was established in 2006 to enhance and create Renton’s wetlands, with thousands of native plants planted to attract and create habitat for wildlife, according to the City of Renton.
The boardwalk is currently closed due to damage at the Southwest 27th Street entrance, according to the City of Renton.
Washington State Department of Transportation crews completed construction on the boardwalk trail with funding from the City of Renton in June 2009. The boardwalk was constructed entirely from recycled structural plastic lumber with its design focused on providing an environmentally conscious trail for visitors with minimal impact to the wetlands, according to project documents.
As of now, the Renton Regional Fire Authority has not provided a cause for the fire. The department said it plans to provide an update to the Renton Reporter regarding the incident once investigation is complete.
The City of Renton asks visitors to follow all posted signage until the structure is repaired and safe to pass.
