An early morning fire Wednesday caused about $50,000 damage to the Mazatlan Restaurant on Rainier Avenue South, according to the Renton Fire and Emergency Services Department.
The fire was reported at about 3:30 a.m.; responding crews saw smoke coming from the roof.
The damage was confined mostly to the roof and the front parapets of the building, with no interior damage, according to Deputy Fire Chief Bill Flora.
The cause of the fire is considered undetermined, said Flora, but it’s possible the cause was electrical in nature. He said there is some old fluorescent lighting inside the building.
He estimated the time to fix the roof at a week to 10 days
Fire crews closed the northbound lanes of Rainier Avenue South for about 90 minutes to fight the fire. The lanes reopened just after 5 a.m.
Employees were waiting for the owner to arrive first thing Wednesday morning. Doors were left open to air out the restaurant and some debris, including insulation, was still on the ground outside.
