Renton firefighters responded to a large brush fire Friday evening, April 19, on the 500 block of Grandey Way Northeast near Sunset Boulevard Northeast and I-405, where wind gusts of 20 mph had caused the fire to spread quickly.
On April 19, there was a large response to the fire, which was threatening homes in the area. According to a post from the official Renton Regional Fire Authority’s Twitter/X page, the smoke from the fire was “causing quite the distraction for drivers on 405” and people were asked to avoid the area as crews continued fighting the fire.
By around 6:30 p.m., the bulk of the fire had been contained, with Renton firefighters saying that crews would remain at the scene to make sure the brush fire was fully extinguished.
Brush fires are nothing new to the Renton area, with over 50 firefighters responding to an enormous fire in east Renton last summer and another brush fire near the Sunset Boulevard ramp for northbound I-405 only a month later. Last fall, the Renton Regional Fire Authority reported that there were a total of 1,771 fire incidences just in August 2023.
