Twenty-four Renton firefighters raised nearly $11,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association last Friday and Saturday by filling their boots with donations from passersby at street corners and intersections.
The project was done in cooperation with Local 864 of the International Association of Fire Fighters, which represents unionized workers in the Renton Department of Fire and Emergency Services.
The amount raised doubled what in the last Fill the Boot fundraiser, in 2007.
Fill the Boot is a 55-year partnership between MDA and local fire departments. Proceeds raised during the street side campaign will help support MDA services and research programs, including transportation services, support groups, and local clinics.
Firefighters have raised more than $167 million in nearly six decades.
MDA is the nonprofit health agency dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases by funding worldwide research. The association also provides comprehensive health care and support services, advocacy and education.
The majority of contributions to MDA come from individual donors. MDA maintains clinics for area adults and children affected by neuromuscular diseases at Children’s Hospital Medical Center, and the University of Washington Medical Center.
