For now, Renton teen is charged as juvenile in transit center robbery

Charges of first-degree robbery against a 15-year-old Renton boy, stemming from a beating at the Renton Transit Center May 5, were refiled Tuesday in King County Juvenile Court.

Prosecutors originally charged Solinuu Leae as an adult, believing he was 16 at the time of the assault. However, after examining a birth certificate, a judge determined Tuesday that he is 15.

At 16, prosecutors can automatically charge a minor as an adult. Now, a hearing will be held before a judge in about two weeks to determine whether to try Leae as an adult.

Leae, his 20-year-old brother Troy and 20-year-old Francisco R. Rondon of Kent were charged with first-degree robbery for an assault and robbery of a 36-year-old man at the transit center on Burnett Avenue.

The assault left the man with a broken left arm and a broken jaw.

If Solinuu is found guilty in juvenile court, he could be held for about two years, according to Dan Donohoe, a spokesman for the King County Prosecutor’s Office. As an adult, he would face 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 years in prison.

The first-degree charge factors in the assault that occurred in the robbery, Donohoe said.

“We believe it’s a serious case,” said Donohoe. “He has a prior history.”

Prosecutors say that Solinuu Leae is a danger to the community.

Solinuu Leae spent a year in juvenile detention – an exceptional sentence – for assaulting a Metro bus driver on Jan. 23, 2010, on her Route 124 bus not far from Foster High School in Tukwila. He was released in January.

An arraignment Tuesday for Troy Leae was again continued, this time to May 31. Rondon pleaded not guilty to the charge at his arraignment Monday.

All three remain in jail, Solinuu Leae at juvenile detention in Seattle.
