A former girls basketball coach convicted of sexually abusing his athletes was charged with fraud for allegedly stealing a dead infant’s identity.
Tony D. Giles of Renton was being investigated for drug trafficking and illegal possession of a firearm, when the Renton Police Department and federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms discovered fraudulent identity cards, according to U.S. District Court of Western Washington documents.
He’s believed to have used the infant’s Social Security number to get benefits from the state Department of Social and Health Services, according to the documents
In 2004 he was the owner of “Players Only,” an elite girls basketball club, when he was convicted of repeatedly sleeping with the teenage players, according to the documents.
He threatened to derail the victims’ basketball scholarships if the victims told police.
He was sentenced for 40 months in prison, according to the documents.
The City of Renton Police Department classified Giles as a Level 3 sex offender, which means there is a high probability that he’ll re-offend.
In January 2009, police searched Giles’ Renton home for marijuana and firearms, which are illegal for felons to own, according to the court documents.
The investigators found a fraudulent Washington state driver’s license with Giles’ photograph and a matching Social Security card.
The ID information matched a baby who died in 1960, according to court documents.
Prosecutors do not know if police recovered a weapon or drugs, but Giles is still under investigation for possession of a firearm and aggravated identity theft.
The Social Security card was first filed in 1990 and sent to Giles’ business address, according to court documents.
Giles was charged and appeared before a federal judge Jan. 22. His detention hearing is set for Jan. 27.
