Charles M. Duffy, who retired in 2008 as a deputy chief in the Renton Fire and Emergency Services Department, is the new Washington state fire marshal.
“Chuck’s fire service background and excellent managerial skills were key factors in his selection,” says State Patrol Chief John R. Batiste, “The application process was extensive to ensure that the best possible candidate was selected.”
More than 20 people applied for the state fire marshal position; the Fire Protection Policy Board reduced that number to seven candidates to interview. Of those seven, three names were submitted to be interviewed by Batiste.
Duffy is an experienced fire service professional with a broad career that spans 40 years. His career began in 1969, as a wildland firefighter, followed by service as a volunteer firefighter in three fire departments in Colorado and Washington.
In 1979, he joined the United States Air Force Reserve as a Fire Protection Specialist. His professional career began in 1980, with the KentFire Department. He began his service with the Renton Fire and Emergency Services Department in 1983. After retiring from Renton, joined the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
