Five Hazen High School students finished first at the Northwest Regional Sport Stacking tournament Saturday at Auburn High School.
More than 300 competitors from around the region competed in the eighth annual event, vying for state and regional titles as well as a shot to move on to the World Sport Stacking Association’s U.S. Nationals Colorado Open.
Among the competitors were the Hazen Speed Stackers from Hazen High School, a world-class stacking team that owns several world records in the Special Stackers division.
Among the Hazen competitors earning first-place finishes at the competition were Priscilla Hurt, Pierce Harris, Josh Glassburn, Ashley Boyd and Brittney Drebert.
The team also notched several potential world record times, with finishes by Drebert, Glassburn and Harris currently being reviewed.
Invented in the early 1980s by Oceanside, Calif., Boys and Girls Club Program Director Wayne Godinet, sport stacking involves a set of 12 uniformly sized cups. The cups are placed upside down on a flat surface and stacked in one of three configurations, then disassembled quickly. Stackers are timed with the goal of completing a stacking cycle in as little time as possible.
The U.S. Nationals will be conducted March 24-25 in Colorado Springs, Colo., with the World Championships following on April 14-15 in Germany.
