Head-on collision involving a school bus kills one

No children on the school bus were reported to be harmed in the NE 3rd Street collision.

A driver is under investigation for DUI and vehicular homicide after colliding with a school bus and causing the death of a passenger in their own car on Dec. 19.

According to Renton Regional Fire Authority spokesperson Sara Morris, fire crews responded to reports of a head-on collision on NE 3rd Street between Bronson Way NE and Edmonds Avenue NE. The collision reportedly involved a sedan and a school bus.

Morris said when responders arrived on the scene, it was determined that one patient was trapped in a passenger vehicle and needed to be extricated by their crews. The roadway was shut down.

Renton Police Department spokesperson Meeghan Black said initial police investigations identified that the sedan was traveling westbound at a high rate of speed on NE 3rd Street before the driver lost control of his car and hit a school bus coming up the hill. The impact of the collision killed the front passenger of the sedan.

The driver and the rear passenger were taken to the hospital for minor injuries, according to Black. The driver of the sedan is under investigation for DUI and vehicular homicide.

Black said there were two children and two adults on the bus. The children were not injured. The adults were taken to the hospital as a precaution.
