Highlands Elementary students chose from an all-girl ticket during their school’s student body election Friday. This was the first time in school history that all candidates have been girls.
Yasmin Rivera was elected president and Jennifer Nguyen vice president. The fifth-grade pair went against two other fifth-grade teams.
All three teams ran campaign ads on school TV to pitch their platforms of reform and change. Candidate promises included advocating for more student clubs and activities; improving student spirit days; and making this the best school year ever.
To be placed on the ballot, students had to collect 100 signatures from their constituents. Students in first- through fifth-grade cast paper ballots during Friday’s lunch period.
In addition to voting, Highlands Elementary students are learning about democracy, elections, campaigning, platforms, as well as crafting promises on the campaign trail.
