Students at Sierra Heights Elementary School were kept indoors with doors locked Thursday afternoon while police searched for suspects in a residential burglary in northeast Renton.
The burglary occurred at about 2:10 p.m. in the 4500 block Northeast 19th Street, west of Duvall Avenue. About 90 minutes later two suspects were detained and jewelry from another burglary was recovered.
A 23-year-old Seattle woman and a 16-year-old Seattle girl were arrested.
A resident was at home when he heard knocking at the door, then the sound of his front door being forced, according to the Renton Police Department. He confronted three suspects inside his home, who fled in a waiting car.
A sheriff’s deputy patrolling the area after a recent residential burglary attempted to stop the getaway car, which fled down a dead-end street. A Kent Police K-9 tracked the suspects from the car. Bellevue Police also assisted in the search.
Officers set up an extensive perimeter around the crime scene, requiring a large police presence.
“You have to wall off a huge chunk of town,” said Renton Police Detective Robert Onishi.
Renton Police were still attempting to find additional suspects.
The students at Sierra Heights were allowed to leave school at their normal release time, 3:35 p.m., according to Randy Matheson, a district spokesman.
Onishi asked that anyone with information about the burglary, including witnesses, call the Renton Police Department at 425-430-7500 or 911 and refer to case No. 2011-12383.
Onishi also pointed out that residential burlgaries increase during the holiday season. Anyone who sees someone acting suspiciously, knocking on doors or entering side or back yards, is asked to call 911.
