A fire that ravaged a Renton home and injured a man reignited itself Monday morning, taking another 30 minutes for firefighters to extinguish.

The fire first started Sunday afternoon on the 500 block of Rainier Avenue North, across from the Renton Municipal Airport, said Renton deputy fire chief Bill Flora.

The resident was taken to Harborview Medical Center in serious condition.

A baseboard heater lit nearby combustibles, causing about $300,000 in damage, he said.

It took firefighters longer than usual to put out the fire, because of fire hydrant accessibility, he said.

“We had to go defensive, because it was about 75 percent involved when we first got there,” he said.

It also took Puget Sound Energy more than the usual time to turn off power to the house, he said.

Firefighters extinguished the fire Sunday in about an hour and 10 minutes. However, at about 2 a.m. Monday, embers reignited the house.

The fire was classified as a one-alarm but it was a working fire, meaning firefighters used more than one hose.

Emergency responders also came from Skyway, Tukwila and King County Medic One.
