The 2010 Census showed that Renton has become more diverse with only 54 percent of the population identifying themselves as white. The city will celebrate its diversity at the upcoming second annual International Festival and Night Market Aug. 26 through Aug. 28.
The festival features cultural performances, a car show, children performances, arts and crafts booths, food, merchandise, games and live bands. New this year is the Night Market, kids fun center and a beer garden.
Organizers are expecting more than 5,000 people to the weekend festival. They have been planning the event for the last eight months with 10 staff members and 60 volunteers.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday will include an appearance by Mayor Denis Law and a representative from the King County Executive Office. Others will participate including event organizer Michael Nguyen, Khanh Vu, executive director of Tet Seattle, Duc Tran, chairman and CEO if Viet Wah Group, Bill Taylor, president of the Chamber of Commerce, Kenneth Kettler, CEO of Tulalip Resort Casino and Tony Au of Tony Au Martial Arts.
“The Renton community has rich diversity, and I am pleased that the Renton International Festival is returning for a second year to celebrate the incredible array of international heritages in our community,” said Law in a release. “This festival brings people together and provides fun experiences for families and individuals to shop, eat and enjoy live entertainment. I hope you will come join us for what will be an
exciting event.”
The festival features a car show of more than 40 cars presented by Speedway Collision Center. The car show was popular last year and will showcase modified show cars from the Northwest, exotic european cars and sound technology options.
Live entertainment features everything from Japanese Taiko drumming from Kaze Daiko, Latin music performances, Vietnamese pop and others.
International cuisine will be offered from more than 30 booths.
The event sponsor is Tulalip Casino.
