Join the CROP walk against hunger this Sunday on the Cedar River Trail

Last year's event raised more than $25,000. This year, the group is aiming for $30,000 to fight hunger.

The annual Renton Area CROP Hunger Walk is scheduled for Sunday at Liberty Park.

Last year’s event raised more than $25,000. This year, the group is aiming for $30,000 to fight hunger.

The Renton area walk is just one of 1,600 CROP (Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty) Hunger Walks that take place each year.

The idea is that hungry people in developing countries typically walk as many as six miles a day to get food, water and fuel, and to take their goods to market. Walkers walk to be in solidarity with their struggle for existence.

According to the group’s website, in the past 20 years, CROP Hunger walks have raised more than $294 million to help people struggling to feed their families – both around the world and around the corner.

Of the money raised, 25 percent will stay in Renton. In its history, the walk has raised more than $500,000 and contributed more than $128,000 for Renton food agencies.

The event takes place on the Cedar River Trail and is a distance of 6.8 miles.

Registration begins at 1 p.m. Sunday at Liberty Park Shelter. The walk begins at 1:30 p.m. with runners starting first. All walkers and runners will be back by 4 p.m.
