“Phenomenal,” that’s what Renton’s Fourth of July organizer Sonja Mejlaender called Monday’s big party at Gene Coulon beach park.
The city’s biggest one-day event drew an estimated 20,000 and 25,000 people to the park. The sunny comfortable weather made the biggest difference this year in the turnout, as last year numbers were down because of cool drizzly weather.
The parking lot at Coulon was full by 9:30 a.m. and never let up, said Mejlaender.
The most fun part of the evening for her was when the barge floated into place off the shores of the beach and children started asking Mejlaender if that’s the barge. It added to the excitement.
She was in touch with the pyrotechnician often throughout the evening and the 20-minute fireworks show went off without a hitch at 10 p.m.
Park maintenance worked hard until midnight cleaning up the park. At 5 a.m. they returned again and got some help from about half a dozen Lindbergh High School Key Club students.
The city is providing an online survey at rentonwa.gov for those who attended Renton’s Fabulous Fourth of July festival to weigh in on their experience this year.
