The King County Library System released its design for the Renton-themed card, an iconic sculpture of a boy reading.
“We just wanted to do something to show people we’re trying to be inclusive,” said spokesperson Julie Brand.
City residents annexed the Renton library to KCLS March 1. The new card design is one way the system hopes to soften the blow of a tight election.
The new card, featuring a statue placed outside the Renton library, will be released April 1.
The card isn’t just for Renton. It will be added to the system’s collection, which has a card for every personality.
“We want the cards to be reflective of our patrons and give them a card that means something to them,” Brand said.
Renton is the only city in the system to get its own card.
KCLS ordered about 50,000 full-size and 13,000 key-chain cards of the boy reading. It will continue to print them as long as people are interested.
The library has been in transition for most of March.
“We’ve really tried to focus mostly on the staff to make sure that they feel welcome,” Brand said.
Renton patrons will need KCLS cards after April 4.
KCLS is planning an open house May 1, where it will show off reopened public meeting rooms and new interior designs.
