The King County Sexual Assault Resource Center is asking volunteers to “stick it to silence” in April.
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month 2012 and KCSARC plans to raise awareness with help from volunteers.
The center has developed stickers with a resource line phone number printed on them. They were created to post in bathrooms, locker rooms, dressing rooms and anywhere members of the community can see them.
“We’re seeing a really big increase in people coming forward,” said Mary Ellen Stone, executive director of KCSARC.
The center has seen a 30 percent increase in counseling requests recently.
In 2011, KCSARC served a total of 2,982 clients and their families.
More people are aware of sexual assault and talking about it, so Stone feels the stigma around it is lifting.
“Up until now it has been pretty taboo to talk about it,” Stone said.
They do know nationally that the rate of child sexual abuse is on the decline, she said.
With this campaign, Stone said, they need volunteers to post the stickers around the community.
The sticker isn’t a silver bullet but a start, Stone said.

Once a form is completed, a “Stick it to Silence” packet can be requested.
