A standoff for more than an hour in the Highlands ended Tuesday afternoon when a SWAT team fired tear gas into the house were a 22-year-old Kent man was hiding.
The standoff ended at about 4:45 p.m. and soon after streets were reopened in the residential area between McKnight Middle School on Edmonds Avenue Northeast and the North Highlands Neighborhood Center on Northeast 16th Street.
Renton Police and the U.S. Marshal’s Office were serving the man with a felony arrest warrant for an incident in May in which he allegedly shot at people in the Highlands, according to the Renton Police Department. The Marshal’s Office had received information about the man.
A Valley SWAT team was called in to serve the felony warrant, because of the violent nature of the earlier offense, according to a department press release.
The man surrendered after the tear gas was fired; he was arrested for investigation of felony assault and unlawful firearm possession
Leading up to his arrest, the man ignored repeated police commands to surrender.
