A man was rescued by Renton firefighters Monday morning from a house fire investigators are describing as suspicious, according to Renton Fire and Emergency Services.

Firefighters arrived with five minutes after receiving a call at about  6:50 a.m. of a residential fire on Jefferson Avenue Northeast near Northeast Eighth Street, according to Deputy Fire Chief Erik Wallgren.

Smoke and fire were coming from the second floor when crews arrived. The man was treated at the scene and released; no other injuries were reported.

Five adults and three children were displaced by the fire. Firefighters rescued numerous pets, although several other pets perished in the fire.

Fire investigators are labeling the fire as suspicious and continuing their investigation, according to Wallgren. The loss is estimated at $250,000.

Investigators report that smoke detectors in the residence were not functioning properly.  It’s important to check your detectors regularly to ensure they have charged batteries and are working properly, according to Wallgren.
