Maplewood first-graders put math skills to use at food drive

Students counted nearly 1,500 food items that will be distributed to Maplewood Heights families.

Maplewood Heights Elementary School first-graders recently used their math skills to count the large collection of non-perishable food items that were donated by families for the school’s annual food drive.

Donated items were grouped by categories and students used their skills and strategies to practice counting items in groups of twos, fives, tens, twenties and so on.

Students counted nearly 1,500 food items that will be distributed to Maplewood Heights families.
