Metro Transit to consider changes to bus service in Renton, Tukwila area

As part of launching the RapidRide F Line in 2014, King County Metro Transit recommends changes to four bus routes in the Renton area to serve more riders more efficiently. The King County Council will consider these changes as part of a public hearing April 30.

As part of launching the RapidRide F Line in 2014, King County Metro Transit recommends changes to four bus routes in the Renton area to serve more riders more efficiently. The King County Council will consider these changes as part of a public hearing April 30.

If approved by the council, Metro would make two rounds of changes to transit service in Renton. In September 2013, Metro recommends extending the Route 140 to The Landing  – a retail, housing and job center in Renton – as well as modifying the path for Route 909 and converting Route 155 to Dial-A-Ride Transit (DART) service. In June 2014, Metro recommends discontinuing Route 110 and Route 140 that duplicate the F Line alignment. The F Line will provide more frequent service and operate for more hours each day of the week connecting Burien, SeaTac, Tukwila and Renton.

In fall 2012 and spring 2013, Metro received comments from more than 185 riders on proposed transit service changes and incorporated public feedback into a final recommendation to council.

Recommended transit changes

  • Extend Route 140 to The Landing (September 2013) – Metro recommends extending Route 140 to The Landing, an area of concentrated retail, employment, and housing near South Lake Washington. This extension will provide service to Boeing and supports the Executive’s King County Aerospace Alliance to promote regional economic recovery and jobs. In June of 2014, Route 140 will be discontinued when RapidRide F Line is implemented as they are largely duplicative.

 

  • Modify Route 909 (September 2013) – Based on public feedback, Route 909 would be modified to serve Renton Technical College, Renton Housing Authority headquarters, and the new Highlands Library.

 

  • Convert Route 155 to DART service (September 2013) – Route 155 would keep its current routing between Fairwood Center (140th Avenue Southeast/Southeast 177th Street) and Southcenter, and provide DART service, upon request only, to the area east of Fairwood Center. This better matches service to rider demand.

  • Discontinue Route 110 (June 2014) – Metro recommends discontinuing Route 110 primarily because the path duplicates the future RapidRide F Line. The Route 110 service hours would be reinvested in RapidRide F Line to provide all-day, two-way service on a path similar to Route 110 between the Sounder Tukwila Station and the Renton Transit Center. The F Line will offer service every 10 minutes during peak hours, with short wait times at the Tukwila Sounder Station. The F Line’s articulated 60-foot buses will hold more riders, and travel times for most riders should be similar to what they have now on Route 110. Riders not served by the F Line along Park Avenue North could instead use routes 240, 342, 560, and 566 at the Renton Transit Center, or walk from nearby F Line stops.
