North Renton Neighborhood to sprout flags this weekend in honor of Memorial Day

The 48 flags that will line the streets were purchased over the past two years through the city's Neighborhood mini-grant program.

Residents in the North Renton Neighborhood will be out this weekend getting their part of the city ready for Memorial Day.

According to volunteer Kathy Matthews, a group of volunteers, including six Renton High School Students, will be gathering Saturday morning to place flags along Bronson Way and Second Avenue.

The 48 flags that will line the streets were purchased over the past two years through the city’s Neighborhood mini-grant program.

Matthews, who grew up and still lives in North Renton, said the idea stemmed from trying to find ways to connect neighbors to each other and the city to combat some of the more unfriendly elements that had infiltrated the neighborhood several years ago.

In the past, she said, the Boy Scouts used to place the flags, but the Neighborhood Association has since taken over.

Matthews said the flags are designed to link the neighborhood with the city as well as show pride and they will remain up through Labor Day.
