The following information is compiled from Renton Police Department case reports.

A Renton police officer held an 18-year-old man at gunpoint, his finger on the trigger, for several seconds until the man threw a knife to the ground.

Officers were called to a fight between brothers on Benson Road South at about 1 a.m. Sept. 8. The older brother was trying to get his younger brother, who had been drinking at a wedding, to come inside. Instead, the 18-year-old punched his brother.

As the older brother and an officer, clearly dressed in a Renton Police jumpsuit, talked, the 18-year-old walked toward them. Something flashed in his hand; it was a kitchen knife.

The brother said, “He has a knife.”

The officer told him to drop the knife, but he kept advancing. The officer pulled his gun. The 18-year-old still advanced.

“You gonna shoot me, shoot,” he said. He raised his knife-wielding hand. The older brother was with the officer.

Now 20 feet from the suspect, the officer pointed his gun at the 18-year-old’s chest and placed his finger on the trigger. He wrote in his report that he was in imminent fear that the teen was going to stab him.

But the 18-year-old threw the knife to the ground and walked off. More officers arrived and the man was found inside his brother’s apartment.

The man, from Des Moines, was arrested for investigation of two counts of second-degree assault and booked into the  King County Jail in Seattle.

Woman reports an ‘assault’

A 25-year-old Renton woman told officers Sept. 5 that her boyfriend pulled a handgun from the dresser and threatened to shoot her if she didn’t shut up.

She cried as she described the incident to officers. The boyfriend pushed her to the floor. He pointed a six-inch silver handgun at her as he rifled through her purse, apparently looking for her phone. He wanted her phone so she couldn’t call 911.

She went to the bathroom and he went to the living room. She found her phone and put it down her pants and went outside to take a walk. Instead, she called 911.

A K9 track didn’t turn up the boyfriend. But her car was found at another home, with two guns inside.

Officers determined there was probable cause to charge the 29-year-old Renton man with first-degree assault, domestic violence.

The next day the girlfriend recanted her story, saying she had been drinking and using drugs and was “trippin.” She was upset with her boyfriend because of something she found on his phone.

The boyfriend wasn’t even at her home that night.

The case was forwarded to the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for review.
