The victim of a package theft helped police track down her stolen property, leading to a sting that resulted in the arrest of a suspect and her armed accomplice this week, according to the Renton Police Department.
The victim was expecting a package delivery on Tuesday, but when she arrived home in the 400 block of Smithers Avenue South, she discovered her back gate open and an empty shipping box in the yard. The unique clothing item she had ordered was missing.
The victim checked “Offerup,” an online marketplace, and found her stolen item posted for sale. She called the Renton Police and a detective, posing as a buyer, arranged for a meeting to purchase the item.
The meeting took place at the Top Pot Donuts at The Landing, and the 33-year-old female suspect walked into the restaurant with the stolen clothing. Her 43-year-old male accomplice stationed himself at the door.
Police officers contacted both subjects and the female was arrested for possession of stolen property and arrest warrants. She was later found to be concealing methamphetamine and was also charged with possession of narcotics.
The accomplice was searched and was found to be concealing a loaded revolver. He was a convicted felon and was arrested for unlawful possession of a firearm and also for violating a no contact order between he and the female suspect.
“This is a good example of why people should be extra cautious when meeting people to buy things online,” Renton Detective LeAnn Whitney said in a press release. “You never know who they are or what their intent is. In this case, the male was an armed felon, and he positioned himself by the door. We don’t know what he was planning to do.
“If you are going to meet someone you don’t know, the best place to meet is the lobby of a police station, or somewhere there are lots of people around,” she said.
