On the first Monday of the month, June 5, the City of Renton celebrated LGBTQ+ Pride month and showed support by raising the Progressive Pride flag over Renton City Hall.
Before the flag raising, there were speeches from Mayor Armondo Pavone and Emergency Management Director, Debra Needham, who talked about how Renton was progressive towards LGBTQ+ rights in the 2000s. “Renton was way ahead, we already had it for two years,” Needham said, referring to domestic partnerships in Washington state.
“Today is a reminder to continue promoting inclusivity, advocating for equal rights, and fostering a sense of pride, dignity, and self-acceptance within the LGBTQIA+ community and society,” said a social media statement from the City of Renton.
