This following information was compiled from City of Renton police.
A man illegally tried to cash a check intended for the Dave Reichert congressional campaign around 1 p.m. on Dec. 16.
The man was trying to cash the check even though he said he had no association with the campaign. When questioned, he told employees at the US Bank he thought he was being paid for his vote. The check was for $25.
The man left the bank and it isn’t clear how he got someone else’s personal check. Police were to follow up by checking security cameras.
Grandma scam
Someone in Canada tried to steal more than $5,000 from a 71-year-old Renton grandmother by pretending to be her grandson.
The fraud happened around noon on Dec. 21. A male called the woman, saying he needed the money to bail out of jail in Ontario, Canada, because he had been arrested for marijuana possession. Another male identifying himself as a Canadian police officer got on the phone and told the woman he needed only half of the money requested.
The woman’s husband called the supposed Canadian police officer back, while she got in touch with her grandson who lives and was at work in Vancouver, Wash. The grandson was unclear who would do this. A check of the phone number of the supposed Canadian officer did have an Ontario area code.
Spree cut short
A 15-year-old Renton girl went on a Christmas shopping spree in Target on Dec. 21, but didn’t pay for it.
The girl put more than $200 worth of merchandise in her cart and attempted to leave the store, 1215 N. Landing Way. She told police around 8 p.m. that she took the items: toys, cosmetics, baby clothes and a wallet, all for Christmas presents.
The girl was given a one-year trespass notice from Target and the case was forwarded to the juvenile prosecutor’s office for consideration of criminal charges.
Boy bitten
An 8-year-old Renton boy was bitten in the face by a Great Dane on Dec. 25.
The incident occurred around 4 p.m. in the 4800 block of Northeast 20th Place in Renton. The dog has a history of being aggressive and is easily startled. It is a rescue dog owned by the mother’s boyfriend. Apparently, the boy tried to cuddle with the dog while it was sleeping and the dog bit him in the face.
The 8-year-old was taken to Overlake Hospital for stitches. The dog was impounded to the animal control kennels. They were to follow-up with an investigation.
