The following information was compiled based on City of Renton police reports.

Police investigated an arson at an auto dealership on June 24.

Police believe the fire, which was set in the trunk of a vehicle, was intentional. The incident happened at Southend Auto, 3400 East Valley Road, at around 9 p.m.

The fire department contained the fire, which spread to the back seat of the 1990 Honda Accord but the fire did not spread to adjacent vehicles.

It was not known what if any accelerant was used or how the fire was started.

Damage was estimated at approximately $850 and police noticed damage to four other vehicles related to the arson.

Mystery man with air rifle

Police encountered a man with an air rifle walking near Maple Valley Highway on June 14.

Someone called police to report a man was walking in a back parking lot in the 2200 block of Maple Valley Highway at about 8:50 p.m.

The 58-year-old man was found in a southeast corner of a parking lot adjacent to the Cedar River.

The man told police he was shooting at leaves.

He had a Remington Pellet/BB air rifle and told police to destroy it; he didn’t want it any more.

One of the officers recognized the man for previously calling police and reporting that someone had tapped his phones and infiltrated his computer.

Police took the rifle and logged it into evidence for destruction.

Rash of graffiti

A rash of graffiti covering private property has continued throughout the city.

The manager of The Berkshire apartments called police on June 15 to report spray-painted gang tags all over the property at 130 South Eagle Ridge Dr. in Renton.

There were tags painted on the front sign, electrical box by the office, on three signs in front of the office, the newspaper dispenser, and several more cable and electrical boxes attached to many buildings.

Pictures were taken of all the tags.

Property renting scam

Suspects posed as fake landlords on Craigslist for a Renton property on June 26.

A 43-year-old Renton man discovered the scam when an interested renter stopped by the house that he is selling.

The interested renter, a Puyallup woman, said she had been emailing another man with the same name about the house.

The 43-year-old put the house up for sale not for rent and used an online listing service.

Police surmised that the suspects trolled the online listings for houses that looked vacant and then placed them on Craigslist.

Two more people stopped by the 43-year-old’s house that day to inquire about renting it.

The ad on Craigslist was eventually removed.

Loud party disbanded

Police broke up a disruptive party on June 23.

Someone called to report a dispute among a large group of people in the 2600 block of Sunset Lane Northeast at around 1:50 a.m.

Police arrived to find 15-20 people in several distinct groups in the street.

They appeared to be agitated and intoxicated.

Police followed up with the party organizer and nearby resident.

Apparently someone’s cell phone was stolen at the party, which caused a commotion. There were at least 50 people still at the residence, some police believed to be minors carrying beer bottles.

Everyone was told to leave and a copy of the case was sent to the Renton Housing Authority.

Walk-by car vandal

A Renton couple witnessed a suspect damage their vehicle and take off on foot on June 24.

The incident happened in the 2000 block of Northeast Seventh Street at about 1:30 a.m.

The couple was sitting on the front porch of their residence when they saw a teenage boy walking down the street.

As the teen got in front of their house, he turned toward the woman’s vehicle and punched it.

This caused a large six-diameter dent on the rear quarter panel.

The couple yelled at the teen and he took off.

The suspect is described as a Latino, teenager, about 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-10, medium build, wearing baggy pants and a baggy black sweatshirt.
