The US Bank on South Second Street downtown was robbed of $3,250 in cash Friday by a man concealed by a white painter’s mask, sunglasses, baseball cap and hooded sweatshirt.

Before he fled, the man looked through his money bag, possibly made of burlap, for a dye pack. He found one, after telling a teller not to put on in the bag, according to the Renton Police report.

The cash included several “bait bills” whose serial numbers are recorded or copied to make it easier to trace the money.

The suspect approached three tellers at about 3 p.m., demanding cash from each one. He kept his right hand in his pocket, but no one saw a gun.

The robbery was caught on security cameras and the suspect’s voice was overhead in a call a bank customer was making on a cell phone.

The man is heard saying something like “You got 15 seconds” and then he threatened to kill someone if they didn’t hurry.

He then fled, running north on Williams Avenue. An officer went to a nearby paint store to ask whether someone had just purchased a painter’s mask. No one had.

About six minutes after the robbery, an officer saw a newer Nissan speed south on Burnett Avenue South or Williams Avenue South and turn west on South Second Street.

Witnesses described the man as lighter complected, 5-foot-10 to 6-foot tall and weighing 190 to 220 pounds.

The investigation is continuing. The FBI also was contacted.
