A 32-year-old Kent man pounded on the door of a Renton apartment at about 6:30 a.m. Sunday, demanding to get in. Then there was silence.
Minutes later, the knocking resumed. A woman inside figured he went to his car to get a gun. She didn’t open the door because she “knew what was going to happen,” according to county prosecutors.
She grabbed her own 9 mm handgun from her room and stood off to the side of the front door – just in case shots were fired into her home. Then, according to prosecutors, Brandon Lamar Green kicked in the door.
Michael Anthony Flowers, 33, who was also inside the apartment, retreated to the couch with his hands up and sat down. Green walked over, stood in front of Flowers and shot at him multiple times, according to prosecutors.
Green was charged Tuesday with second-degree murder in the death of Flowers, which was ruled a homicide by the King County Medical Examiner’s Office. Flowers died at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle of his injuries.
Green’s arraignment is 9 a.m. March 31 at the Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent. Green, a convicted felon, is also charged with second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm. He’s being held on $2 million bail at the county jail in downtown Seattle.
If convicted, Green faces a sentencing range of 19 years to 28 years, according to prosecutors.
Arriving Renton Police officers found Green critically wounded in the parking lot of the Plum Tree Park Apartments, 200 S.W. Fifth Pl., at about 6:30 a.m. There was blood near his groin area. Green was treated at Harborview Medical Center, then transported to jail.
Green’s girlfriend, with whom he has an 8-year-old child, and a neighbor were crouched over him. A woman called out from her balcony that another person was shot inside her apartment.
Officers found Flowers with gunshot wounds to his chest and buttocks.
Investigators learned that years ago, Flowers had a relationship with Green’s girlfriend, who was in the apartment at the time of the shooting, according to prosecutors. Everyone involved knew each other and the relationships were described as “family.”
Flowers, who has a West Seattle address, is a friend of the woman who lives in the apartment.
She told investigators that after the initial shooting, she pulled Green from the apartment at least twice, but he returned, according to charging documents. Green told her that she wouldn’t shoot him.
Green then shot Flowers again, according to prosecutors.
Then she shot at Green with her 9 mm, striking him, according to prosecutors. She believes Green also shot at her because she could smell the smoke from the pistol. She won’t be charged because she shot in self-defense, according to a Renton Police Department spokesman.
She somehow got Green outside and shut the door. She put down her gun, attempted to treat Flowers and called 911.
Neighbors heard arguing upstairs; someone yelled “open the door” and then someone yelling, “No, don’t open it.” There was a loud bang as the door was kicked in someone yelled, “Brandon, no.”
They heard some movement, two shots, more screaming, “banging around,” three or four more shots, then screaming. They saw Green and his girlfriend running around outside until he collapsed.
A neighbor was asked to hide “the evidence,” a .40 caliber pistol, but refused. Officers found it in a nearby porch.
