Volunteers from a local trade group built wheelchair ramps for three Renton residents.
The Master Builders Care Foundation fundraised and built about 20 ramps May 15 throughout the King and Snohomish counties.
“We wanted to give back to the community,” said Chad Kulper, a team leader from John F. Buchan Homes. “The master builders have been putting it on for 17 years.”
Kulper organized a team of six builders, and spent about 10 hours designing, building and staining a ramp for 95-year-old Katherine Bruce.
“At the end she came out on her walker and came out on the ramp, and was really excited,” Kulper said. “It was really kind of special. It summed it up why we’re doing it.”
His company had been wanting to volunteer more in the community, when this opportunity came up, he said. “We’ll be looking for other opportunities in the future.”
Woodinville Lumber donated about $1,400 in wood to build the ramp. The team members pitched in for nails and stain.
Since 1993, Rampathon has provided more than 270 disabled homeowners with free wheelchair ramps.
The Care Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the Master Builders Association of King and Snohomish Counties.
